SMOOTH NASO-LABIAL FOLDS
Dr. Honeycutt offers prescription injections that are approved to temporarily smooth out and fill in moderate to severe nasolabial folds (the folds or wrinkles that go from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth).
Who should not use prescription fillers for nasolabial folds?
Prescription fillers should not be used in patients with a history of or presence of multiple or severe allergies, including those with a history of anaphylaxis. They should also not be used in patients with allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins.
What is the most important information I should know about prescription injections for nasolabial fold relief?
As with all events that involve an injection through the skin, there is a risk of infection. Laser treatments, chemical peels, or any other treatments that affect the skin can increase the risk of infection. Do not use this treatment if you have a skin inflammation or a skin infection. Do not use until the infection is healed.
Patients getting prescription injections for nasolabial fold smoothing may have an injection-site reaction. These reactions can include inflammation and usually last less than 7 days.
For approximately 24 hours after treatment, avoid:
- Strenuous activity
- Extensive sun or heat exposure
- Aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Alcoholic beverages
Exposure to any of the above can cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection site.
It is not known how prescription fillers will work in areas of the face other than the smile lines, nor is it known how they will work in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or people who are less than 21 years of age.
What should I tell my doctor before getting prescription injections to treat nasolabial folds?
Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that affect blood clotting, like aspirin, NSAID, or warfarin. These medicines may put you at an increased risk of bruising or bleeding at the treatment site.
Tell your doctor if you have a skin reaction like cold sores, cysts, pimples, rashes, hives, or an infection. Treatment with prescription fillers should be delayed until the reaction goes away.
Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that affect your immune system.
What are the most common adverse events seen with prescription treatments for nasolabial folds?
The most common local side effects seen with these treatments were swelling, bruising, redness, hardening of the skin, pain, altered color, or itching. Other side effects that have occurred include headache, swelling of the side of the nose, moderate cold sore, lip numbness, and lip dryness. Side effects were often mild to moderate and often resolved within 7 days.
FINE LINE AND WRINKLE REMOVAL
Cosmetic botulinum toxin is a simple, nonsurgical procedure that smooths the deep, persistent lines and wrinkles that develop over time. In fact, it is the only FDA-approved treatment for the temporary reduction of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in patients 18 to 65 years of age.
How does cosmetic botulinum toxin work?
Cosmetic botulinum toxin utilizes a natural, purified protein administered at very low doses to reduce the contractions of the muscles causing those persistent frown lines that have developed over time. While the results are dramatic, it will not radically change your facial appearance. The muscles are simply relaxed, so you can still frown, smile, or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases.
What is a cosmetic botulinum toxin treatment like?
Cosmetic botulinum toxin procedures are fast, simple, and minimally invasive, and no anesthesia is required. Injections are administered with an ultra-fine needle directly into the area being treated. Discomfort is minimal and brief, and once complete, there is usually no discomfort. Most people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment, so there’s no recovery or downtime.
What areas can be treated with cosmetic botulinum toxin?
Cosmetic botulinum toxin treatments can be performed in a number of locations, including between your brows, eye area, smile lines, and neck. Effects of cosmetic botulinum toxin appear within a few days and generally last from 4-6 months. Individual results may vary.
How soon will I see a difference?
You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance of the area between your brows may continue to improve for up to 3 weeks.
Are there any side effects?
Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects. The most common include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Others side effects include pain and redness where the medicine is injected, pain in the face, and muscle weakness. These effects generally occur within the first week and usually go away on their own. Your own results may vary. Be sure to talk to Dr. Honeycutt about what you can expect.
What happen if I decide not to continue?
If you decide not to continue with cosmetic botulinum toxin, the area treated will eventually go back to its pre-treatment appearance.
What about cosmetic botulinum toxin and the treatment of excessive sweating?
Cosmetic botulinum toxinis also an effective treatment for excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis, and is addressed under the medical section of our website. Insurance typically covers Botox for the treatment of hyperhidrosis when other treatments have either failed or are not tolerated.
